I've got a good user base but I've been losing rankings so time to dive into the SEO world. So in my mind I would give affiliates their own URL; domain.com/affiliate1 domain.com/affiliate2 Would it be best to redirect both of these to the main page domain.com(currently single page will move to multi soon)? From what I've read online as long as I tag the redirects with a no follow and use 301s then it shouldn't have any negative effect. Can anyone see a problem with this sort of approach? We noticed a sharp increase in blog impressions starting in February, but a significant drop in traffic and CTR. Rankings have improved, so competition or content quality doesn’t seem to be the issue. We suspect SERP cannibalization, which is possibly due to hundreds of tag pages (keywords are implemented as tags to blog posts, unique URLs were created for each keyword, and they became indexable, around the same time, 470 pages), but I want to make sure we’re not missing anything. So a month back, I posted a question about how im new to seo and where to learn it. 50 days later, ive obtained theoretical knowledge about seo, like keyword research, on page optimization, etc. and also completed the Hubspot SEO certification. I’ve already set up a 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS and specified the HTTPS version as the canonical URL. Despite this, Google continues to show the HTTP version in search results. Bing, surprisingly, shows the correct HTTPS version without issue. I have figured out how Google may be finding AI content for those Copying and pasting content into their site or using an API to generate content and post on your site. AI content is leaving markers enbeded in the HTML of the content if you use one of the above mentioned ways to produce content on your site. The search engines are looking for The following markers in the code. the numbers in the data start and end are random as far as I can tell. The are also looking for excessive em dashes or "—" a tell tell sign of AI Generated content. The good news is you can strip this out of the code and remove the em dashes. I can't garentee that this will help your situation because quality of content veries with the producer but this will remove markers and redflags. Also going forward if you are copy and pasting content from AI tools like ChatGPT past text only no formating or past it in a text editor first. Also when asking gemini what these snippets were it told me the following. I asked it "what is this? data-pm-slice="1 1 []"" Its responcse was: "The HTML attribute data-pm-slice="1 1 []" is likely related to ProseMirror, a toolkit for building rich text editors. Specifically, this attribute is added to HTML content that is copied from a ProseMirror editor to indicate that the content originated from that editor. ProseMirror uses this attribute to preserve whitespace when pasting content that includes it. In essence, data-pm-slice="1 1 []" acts as a marker to help ProseMirror handle pasted content correctly, particularly regarding whitespace." These are clearly markers for copied and pasted content. Below are a sample of some of the code snippets. the way you can search for these markers is to view source of your page and control or command + F on your keyboard depending if your on a Mac or Windows. Hello guys i have multiple domain for different countries and I have them conected with an footer drop-down to let users select their desired country, each country is region Subdomain based like London.domain.com , Manchester.domain.com etc for each country In Semrush a lot of this li ks are seen as high spam even if I used hreflang for each link they are all follow. I have a client site with both a cookie banner as well as a legal disclaimer interstitial that covers most of the page (it's not an age gate). I just discovered that if I'm incognito on my phone, the cookie banner tool we're paying for is smart enough to only show itself once, but the legal disclaimer that was manually coded keeps loading and covering up the content on every page load and needs to be closed every single damn time. Do you think this is hurting my SEO as Google crawls through the site? On Lighthouse test / chromium it renders the disclaimer interstitial :/ I'd imagine for crawling and indexing purposes though Google is smart enough to figure it out and not load the popup when it does it's re-rankings and page renders, but who knows? Google surely can't be tripped up by something like this when they index billions of pages a day, or can they?? I have a client that we've been working on SEO for a few years, and has built some decent topical authority. Though the majority of their pages are being indexed, about 15% of their blogs are not being indexed. They are being detected by Google and are marked as indexed, but Google is not indexing them. We tried resubmitting their sitemap, but no luck. I was debating on going through each URL and request indexing, but I don't know if that would hurt more than help, and it's very time-consuming. I want to ask how anyone else may manage client provided content. I have a large client, with several different brands under their main company. Recently, they're started to provide content to us, or have other agencies providing it. Historically, we've written it (and it does extremely well in terms of ranking, traffic, and conversion -- even with LLMs coming int). The issue we're facing is that the content provided is: So bad we can't optimize it or make worth publishing. The other agencies shifting it to entirely promotional material (which after 20 post on one client in 6 months has largely fallen flat). We've provided best practices, trainings, and ongoing assistance to the agencies and internal staff. Sadly, the other agencies seem to have non-experts writing the content and internal team members just don't have the understanding of what a "blog post" actually is. Their internal staff is amazing, but I think it's a generational issue (raised in IG/TikTok so more than 50 words is too LONG). It's making our work really hard to keep delivering on. We recently stopped writing for one of them because the partner content was so bad, we didn't know what to do with it. The next piece: Now the other agencies seem to coming for the content (rewrites, updates) that we maintain with strong performance, and even want to start rewriting entire sections of the website, and "give it us" after they are done. We have said it doesn't work well that way, I've even said NO. We are trying to help clients understand that we need clear lanes of operations, but that seems to hard to understand. I see lots of people trying to figure out why large parts of their site have become "crawled - not indexed" that were previously indexed. I also see lots of posts about how come rankings are dropping after an update? I also see lots of posts about Google not indexing new content. This is all probably because of your backlinks. It should be clear that backlinks = authority in Google. It's been that way since Google was Backrub. Sure the relative importance of links has changed over that time, but links are still foundational to Google rankings. Authority is tied to indexing/re-indexing/maintaining indexed pages. Not just rankings. Just have to read through Google's PageRank patents to figure this out. You need backlinks to ensure the authority of those pages is high enough to be considered for indexing in the first place. Those pages inherit their authority via links pointing to them both within your site and without (external links). Internal pages provide some form of authority based on their own value, or authority, to those pages they link to. Similarly, you need authority to ensure those pages remain indexed. Building links for a few months then stopping won't do it. That's because what Google considers "worthy" is always changing. Links considered valuable 6 months ago may not be so valuable now. The old rules still apply: links = authority = indexing = ranking. They are all related. If you lose one (IE links) you will lost the rest eventually. And yes, I know there will be people who say "but I can rank sites without links" - ya maybe for low search volume/low competition phrases. I can do that too. But for more competitive phrases, link building consistently is still one of the most important ranking factors. But to prove it to you here's some of my own experience. It has worked on several of my own websites repeatedly: For all our sites we do regular ongoing link building. We don't look for "highly relevant" or "highly authoritative" links. We just get links. We also get a mix of links - they aren't all keyword anchor links. Some are naked links (IE just a bare link on the URL of the page). Links also go to many different parts of the site - not just home page. Some are also just links on the phrase "about us" to our about page. Not a lot of value in some cases, but still important BECAUSE YOU WANT YOUR LINK BUILDING EFFORTS TO APPEAR NATURAL. Hence, a variety of links to many pages. The key is consistency. Set a goal for a number of links per month and try to stick to it. To supplement this, I do regular content development. I also embed keyword anchor links in every article I write. Usually I look at my current rankings to see what phrases I need work on, and try to incorporate those phrases into the article into the introduction somehow. And usually with 3 or 4 days I can see my rankings for that phrase improve. I just did this last week and the phrase I chose improved 5 spots in rankings since Thursday (it's now Monday). The phrase I targeted gets 12.100 monthly searches and my site now ranks #2 for it when it was #7 Thursday and I'm already seeing increased traffic from search due to this single phrase (not just to this article - but to the site as a whole). So this week I'm targeting another highly searched for phrase for which I am on page 1, but lower down (position 5). I already have a related topic to write about, so I will write a new article, include that phrase in the introduction as a keyword anchor link) and watch the ranking improve by the weekend, if not early next week. So if you are having problems with "crawled not indexed" or falling ranking, or lowering indexed page counts, get link building now. For the past few days I am getting thousands of hits from IP addresses that belong to Facebook. These visits are accessing different areas on my site. Each hit is from a new IP address and they all access a different page on my site. They do not dwell on the site. Each hit request only one page. The behavior look like bots. SEO is just one part of a much wider role for me and I'm by no means an expert, so I rarely look on this sub - apologies if the same thing has been said 1,000 times, but I need to vent. When doing some year-on-year analysis of web analytics I noticed our site had taken a fairly decent hit in organic search traffic, so I pulled a load of Search Console data and started looking at terms where the click have dropped significantly compared to the same period last year. Time and time again it showed that average position had improved and impressions had improved. So I put these terms into Google in an incognito window and my god, I hadn't realised just how insane the results pages have got. One term (a very big one for us) ranks on average in the top 4 and has had a 66% increase in impressions year-on-year, but clicks are down 50%. I looked at the SERP and this was the order of the page: AI Overview Videos People Also Ask Organic Result 1 Find Results On (no sites were sites that feature organically on the first page of the results) Businesses map/listings Organic Result 2 (our site) Organic Result 3 Organic Result 4 Images Fucking hell, the first 10 items feature 6 SERPs features and only 4 organic results. I'm by no means saying it's the entire reason organic traffic is down, but it just feels like even when we do everything right that still isn't enough.
